SEO is Easy?

A recent post got me thinking about how easy or hard Search Engine Optimization really is. Most people that I deal with in building websites haven't the faintest idea about the basics of search engine technology and thus have a hard time comprehending the requirements for their website.

The blog post in question: SEO is FAR AWAY from being easy at Florchakh Dot Com starts off with:

"A few months when Matt Codingtton made a poll titled “is SEO easy?“, most of readers answered “yes, it is“. Is it a common phenomenon when something becomes very popular people just start to talk about it as an “touch-and-go” plaything?

I consider SEO to be a very complex issue...."

Yes Search Engine Optimization is a complex issue, after you have been at it for awhile the complexities can become increasingly mind boggling. However I feel that for most sites, small local business' like the ones I deal with, SEO can be a simple process that need not consume all of a business owners time or require the expensive outsourcing many companies are unable to pay for.

A recent example, one that I was told was impossible, was that a domain name that I had parked came up in the 9th position in a Yahoo search for its keywords. First Page on Yahoo and there was no website, just a common parked page with advertising.

Now this involved no SEO on my part except for the fact that all of the keywords were in the domain name and there was very little competition. So was this easy? Yes.

Is this SEO? I consider keywords in your domain name to be a large part of Search Engine Optimization. After that it comes to both on page and off page optimization which can be as simple as relevant content, H1, Title and Alt Image tags.

Good back links helped one of my customers go from near last place on both Yahoo and Google for their search term to alternating between the top three pages of both search engines. And they did this on their own following instructions from a report they hired me to to compile.

So is SEO Easy?

Easy enough if you know the basic's and stick to them without trying to find some magic formula that will have immediate results on your Search Engine Ranking. It does however remain an ever changing landscape so when the basics aren't doing enough then it may be time to consider brining in a proffesional, even if its just to point you in the right direction.

Scalability and Online Marketing

Stumbling across the internet, viewing some competitors for certain keywords I came across an interesting post, and an interesting blog, by Jay Jennings. The following link to his post is a good and quick read which brings up the point of scalability:

JayJennings.com: Real…marketing…warts and all!:

"— don’t fall victim to “analysis paralysis” — but at the same time, always try to keep in mind the thought, “How will this work if 100 times the business starts pouring in?”"

Granted it depends on your business model.

As I am still learning the differences between my strengths and weakness' and what options there are out there as far as online marketing my routine has changed. And with it the ability to handle 100 times the amount of business.

For a while I had been considering launching a software product of my own. The only thing that stopped me was a lack of programming skills among the people I talked too. Now, reading his blog, I realize that there was more that I hadn't considered. Like customer service issues.

Despite my software idea being on the backshelf Jay Jennings post has put it back to the front of my brain for further consideration and planning.
