Re-Indexing or What is a Google Dance?

If you have ever noticed a change in your Page Rank or Search Ranking it may be due to Re-Indexing.

What is a Google Dance?: "Google Dance is the resulting changes in search engine results after...

Index Update
When new indexing data is pushed out to data centers.

Other search engine jargon you might want to learn straight from the official Google blogger himself includes:

Algorithm update
Typically yields changes in the search results on the larger end of the spectrum. Algorithms can change at any time, but noticeable changes tend to be less frequent.

Data refresh
When data is refreshed within an existing algorithm. Changes are typically toward the less-impactful end of the spectrum, and are often so small that people don’t even notice. Index update is one of these data refreshes."

So How often does Google do and Index Update?

According to Google: "Crawls are based on many factors such as PageRank, links to a page, and crawling constraints such as the number of parameters in a URL. Any number of factors can affect the crawl frequency of individual sites.
Our crawl process is algorithmic; computer programs determine which sites to crawl, how often, and how many pages to fetch from each site."

And they go on to say that they don't accept payment for initiating crawls.

But they do offer plenty of free tools at Google Webmaster Central.

Double Your CPC by Checking Blog Post Keywords

Here's another great tool to add to the few from a couple of posts ago, Read the Following Article:

Double Your CPC by Checking Blog Post Keywords:

"When you are writing a blog post, write yourself a first draft. Work on it until you are happy with what it says, but don't publish it yet. When you are done your first draft, open the External Adwords Keyword Tool."

I also used the tool to search one of my existing sites for high paying keywords and will use that information to optimize the words and phrases I use in the future. It will also help to decide what topics I write about and where I can focus my research for the most return per click.

Creating Catagories in Blogger

OK, I have seen it on a bunch of other blogs and I wanted it for mine. Covet is the word. The ability to classify past posts into categories making them easily searchable for someone already on your site looking for certain types of posts, for instance SEO information over my random Domaining posts.

For now I found:

.NET Compact Framework Tutorials: Blogging_: categories categories categories in Blogger blogs:

"It is possible to have categories in your Blogger blog. A simple search (in Google or Blogger) shows that there are hacks to do it (see my previous post on which are the more popular techniques). However, these hacks are a little complicated for some, especially if you only need a basic category function. And most of these hacks rely on external sites to do the tagging, such as Technorati and del.icio.us. "

After using the tool and uploading the code I cant say that it is what I wanted. But it was too easy and tremendous for a beginer like me.

Vodka.com Sold for $3 million

This is why I love the idea of Domaining:

$3 Million Sale of Vodka.com and Two Huge .Org Deals Assure Merry Christmas for Domain Market:

"Vodka.com go for $3 million in the year's second biggest domain sale "

Roy Messer's sale of Vodka.com to Russian Standard Co. (the makers of Imperia brand vodka) made headlines around the world and the deal, brokered by Sedo.com, should draw additional corporate attention to the value of great generic domain names.

The article goes on to show what I have been telling friends, that extensions besides the .com's are coming along and gaining value everyday. I read where someone else referred to it as there being more Real Estate available off of Main Street.

Date.org sold for$150,349 and Loan.org got $105,500

And what was a surprise for me, having heard from everyone that a domain with more than ten letters isn't valuable is IndividualRetirementAccounts.com, with a whopping 28 letters, sold for $12,350.

Make Money With Top Search Engine Rankings

Its no secret that Google gets most of the traffic on the internet, followed closely by Yahoo and MSN back in third place. So if we're going to beat the next guy at getting some free search engine traffic what is required and where would you start?

Well first of all you have to realise that you aren't likely to rank at the top of most keywords overnight, infact it can take months of hard work to rank for high traffic keywords so the key here is to start with keywords you can target that don't have a lot of competition. This makes your job 50% easier before you even load a page to the internet.

Next lets look at the specific engines, google takes the longest to rank for out of the top 3 so I like to look closely at MSN search because my experience tells me that even though they dont get anywhere the same amount of traffic I can rank higher and faster here.So my first port of call is to do keyword research specifically with MSN in mind.I use a few tools here but by far the easiest way to do this is to use the free keyword reseach tool at digitalpoint.com .Here you can check keyword patterns and traffic patterns for your desired keywords to see how many searches are performed in the major engines, and also to find spin off keywords you probably would'nt have considered before. You can also check both Overture and Wordtrackers results against each other here to get a feel for how the traffic patterns are going to be for a top rank with your selected keyword.

A rule of thumb I use for MSN is that the traffic for any keyword I search in digital points tool is divided by approx 3-4 to give me an idea of the traffic in MSN.So if my desired keyword had 1000 searches per day according to both Wordtracker and Overture then I can confidently say a number 1 rank in MSN should provide about 300 searches. This doesnt mesn you will get 300 hits , in fact you may only get about half the searchers hit your site through MSN or any search engines for that matter even if you rank # 1.

So now I can confidently say a top rank for that keyword will provide approx 150 hits or visitors per day.So now we have chosen a keyword that looks good whats next?

Check out the competition on MSN.Theres no point choosing words that you realistically will never rank for .The competition pays big money to be at the top so unless you have the same budget stay away from that game. Those so called gurus of the internet will squash you .My reccommendation is to rank for terms that have less traffic and thats easier to get to #1, especially in MSN.

So what am I looking for when it it comes to my competition ? well we all know that relevant , theme related inbound, 1 way links from authority sites are the easiest way to rank # 1 or top 10.

In fact it doesnt take too many high quality inbound links to rank for thousands upon thousands of terms. So here is where the fun begins, After you have uploaded your site and optimised the page with all the relevant html tags etc then gathering links to your page is the single most important task you can undertake to rank.I am not an authority on link gathering but here are a few suggestions.

Write high quality articles about your chosen subject or pay someone to write articles , then submit them to the free article directories, here your article will be picked up by other webmasters and placed on their site with your link on them, This can create many many 1 way links very quickly for your page.

Approach other webmasters in your chosen topic and request link exchange(I personally dont do this as its boring and outdated and honestly is very time consuming)

Use social bookmark sites like del.ici.us to get your content out there and also to get you links from your tags. The search engines love social bookmark sites, I use about 25 of them and they always provide high quality 1 way links, and often with very high PR.

Write a blog about your site and link to it then feed that blog using rss or other syndication methods.this can also provide 1 way links and better results in the search engines.

Buy links. Yes buy them , a few high quality , related links with good Google Page Rank will help massively.

These few ideas I use every day and many more to get traffic and beat the next guy in the engines, especially MSN.

So there you have it a few small ideas to get you moving so go forth and "make money".

So the only thing left to do after you have achieved a top rank for a number of keyword terms is to make money from them and here are my top two ideas for making money that I use everyday.

1) Google adsense, Sign up free and place the ad code on your page and you will earn a share of each and every click visitors make from those ad blocks.

There are dozens of other places you can earn on a "pay per click " basis but Google stands out head and shoulders above the rest in my opinion.

2) Affiliate marketing, If your site or page is about losing weight, then sign up free as an affiliate to any one of hundreds of sites that sell these type of products .Then place a link on your page which has your personal code embedded into it and if a visitor clicks on your link and decides to buy then you will recieve a share of that sale.Sometimes as high 70% of that sale.

So there you have it, now go out there and make some money online, because if you dont I will do it for you.

The Basics of Linking

From SEO Book:

Here’s how Google ranks Web pages: Google ranks websites on their value of merit. One of Google’s algorithms that does just that is the Page Rank™ algorithm, named after one of Google co-founders, Larry Page. In its most basic form, Page Rank™ calculates the number and quality of incoming links to any given website.

As far as Google is concerned, a link from site A to site B is viewed as a ‘vote’, which means that if 300 sites link to site B, that site must be more important than if it only had 5 or 10 inbound links.

As a result, the more links you would have pointing to a given website, usually the better that site would be perceived in terms of quality of content. Since the past 3 or 4 years, a great number of webmasters and site owners have participated in what is called reciprocal link exchanges, which, as the name implies, does just that: “I will put a link from my site to your site, if you do the same”.

In essence, there is nothing wrong with that. However, since Google’s two major last updates, in November and January (Florida and Austin), reciprocal links don’t seem to have the same impact as they once had, at least not from a ranking point of view.

Since then, it would appear that one-way links (from A to B and not B to A also) are receiving better rankings. Which reopens the debate on “are buying links ethical?”

Steve Robertson: Is his keyword report worth it?

For those of you that don't know, there is a relativly new newsletter available called "The Keyword Report"

$29 bucks a month gets you what are supposed to be oversearched underutelized keywords around which you can design a website or blog.

The Keyword Report: Opportunities from Keyword Research:

"This newsletter uses a paid subscription model and currently costs $29 a month. What you get is a weekly report of what Steve refers to as 'special situations' — well-searched keywords that are being underserved by the market according to Steve's research. Steve gave me a trial subscription so I could see a few reports in action and give you my opinion. (Note there's no affiliate program involved here.) Here's what he says in his latest issue about the research he's doing:

I'm following Mark Joyner's 'thirsty crowd' philosophy here. In my mind, the best use of these special keywords involves developing a new product (or finding one, if you are an affiliate) that satisfies the high demand inherent in each keyword. Then, of course, you need to develop or adapt a high quality website that sells your product - while also offering the visitor valuable free information. A lot of work, but worth it when the higher profits start rolling in!"

Get motivated to create new AdSense content

If you're new to AdSense, getting motivated to write original content can be difficult. Writing content takes time, and it also takes time to get the content advertised and get links into each page. If you still have a day job, it can be tough to make the time.

One way to motivate yourself to create the content and get the links is to calculate how much you are earning per page per year. Multiply that times any number of pages and you will have a good idea of how much money you are missing out on by NOT creating content and getting links.

Let's take an example. Let's say that you have 100 pages of content that are earning you $100 a month.

That means that each page is making you, on average, $1 per month, or $12 per year.

$12 per year may not sound like much, but let's say that you created one unique article every 3 days and got a few links to that article with link exchanges, etc. 365 days in a year means that in one year you will have added and linked about 122 additional pages
of content.

122 pages of content times $12 per year is $1,464 that you are missing out on every year because you are not creating new content.

Now, let's say that you can write and link one page per day. That's 365 pages per year, or $4,380 per year.

Of course, if you focus on the high paying keywords, you are much more likely to generate more than $12 per year per page. If you focus on the right keywords, you could make as much as $100 per page per year or more!

Do the math with that number, and you'll see that adding and linking one page ever 3 days will earn you an extra $12,200 per year. Writing one page per day will earn you an extra $36,500 per year!

And keep in mind that every year you will add additional content, which means that your earnings will grow and grow as time goes on.

The truth is, once you start creating a lot of quality content and getting just a few links to each page, the initial traffic you get will start to spread the word about your site. Next thing you know your site is getting hundreds of links from all over the place, and you didn't have to ask for them!

Traffic will start to build, your search engine rankings will improve, and in time you will be earning sums of money that you didn't dream of before–all because you took a few hours a week to devote to creating quality content and getting a few links.

So adopt a long-term AdSense vision, and in time you will reap the rewards.

To Park or Develop Your Domain Name

Development can be a long road with an uncertain future as far as having your website generate revenue. For many people developing a quality website when they have zero web design skills seems impossible. On the other hand Parking your domain and waiting around for people to type its name in their toolbar or for someone to offer to puchase it can be time consuming and ultimately just as unprofitable.

So what to do?

Try reading the following article from Domain Name Journal. It not only explores some of your options but points to some interesting resources, such as SmartName.com which lets you park your domains AND add content.

Repaving the Parking Lot: Have Domain Developers Won the Debate? Page 2:

Minnesota’s DanMcCullough... “I started developing my domains a few years ago when I realized that sitting on the domains waiting for buyers wasn't all that appealing or financially rewarding for me. I needed my domains to generate revenue flows from more access points instead of just the one that most domains have. Most domains have traffic at 'exampledomain.com' and that's it. When developed that domain can have unlimited access points for traffic as in 'exampledomain.com/page1', 'exampledomain.com/page2, etc,' McCullough said.

'I've used this strategy even on generic typos. Take creditcounsler.com for example. When parked that domain brought in around 35 visitors a month, but just by adding 60 pages of content the site now has 60 access points from which it generates traffic (and revenues) far greater than it would ever get just sitting parked.' Website Success = Content! Content! Content!

by: Francois du Toit

We have all heard the real estate slogan: “Location! Location! Location!”. Well, if that is the slogan of the real estate industry then “Content! Content! Content!” is certainly the slogan for all webmasters. Maybe I should rather say it SHOULD BE the slogan for all webmasters…Unfortunately many webmasters are only focusing on how they can make more money instead of providing visitors to their website with good content.

I recently heard that more than 40% of all people with an internet business have only been online for no longer than 6 months. I am not sure about the exact percentage but I can believe that 40%+ is not far away from the truth.

One thing is for sure: Many people start an internet business believing they are going to make a fortune online within a very short period of time. The reality is that very few people actually achieve any sort of online success, especially in the first six months. The result is a constant stream of new webmasters and a constant outflow of disillusioned webmasters.

Most newcomers are totally disillusioned with the internet after only a couple of weeks or months. They often fall prey to unscrupulous dealers that sell them expensive programs “guaranteed” to make them succeed on the internet. Most of these programs do not work and they leave with the bitter taste in their mouths of being conned.

Do the statistics prove that one should not attempt to make money online or that the internet is a big hoax? No, they prove that people give us too soon. They prove that people have unrealistic expectations. They prove that people do not acquire enough knowledge before embarking on an online business.

What are the most common mistakes?

1. No clear strategy. Newcomers often have no clear idea of what they want to achieve and how they should go about achieving it. They try to go of in all directions at once or use the shotgun approach of firing away at everything that moves hoping they will eventually hit something.

2. Unrealistic expectations. People often spend $25,000+ pa. on college fees for three years just to earn $40,000 pa. when they graduate. However, when it comes to making money online they refuse to invest the time to learn how to succeed and expect to make $10,000 from the very first month working only a couple of hours per day.

3. People are often chasing money without taking the time to put the necessary structures in place that will enable them to earn money.

Assume you want to open your own restaurant. Do you try to make money without a location or any food to offer your customers? No! You start by drawing up a business plan - What are you planning on doing, how & when are you going to start, who are your competitors, how long will it take before you start making money, how much money do you need to invest, what does your cash flow look like, etc.

Many people still think they can build a quick one page website or get a free affiliate website and that they will have a constant stream of visitors eager to snap up anything they have to offer. Nothing can be further away from the truth.

Think about it logically. Put yourself in the shoes of a visitor. Most people search the internet looking for information (content). The search engines know this and reward unique content websites by indexing them more favorably than poorly constructed websites, websites with very little content or duplicate websites. There are millions of websites on the net. I am sorry, but if a visitor runs a search for a keyword such as “business opportunity” and your site is number 99,000,000 of 100,000,000 then you are never going to get any visitors. Accept it.

What can you do? The first and most important step you can take is to ensure that your website has good content. Write about something you know and are passionate about. If you struggle to write one page about a certain topic then rather forget about it. You should be able to write many pages of relevant content that other people would like to read. Try to remain original and focus on unique content.

There are many things you can do to improve your website in the future by making it more attractive to your visitors as well as the search engines. However, there is really nothing you can do to improve a website with poor content until you do something to improve the content.

Whatever website you want to establish, remember the golden rule: Content! Content! Content!

To your success!

10 Proven Ways to Boost Traffic to Your Web Site or Blog!

Creating traffic just takes a little work and the web does the rest!

1. Provide your visitors with free content, that is, articles or blog posts. Your content will be more attractive to your visitors if it's up-to-date or original. You could also offer people the option to reprint the content in their e-zine, blog, or web site. Always add your URL at the end of the articles so people can find you. This further attracts new and returning visitors, and, submit your original articles to directories such as this one - ArticleHangout.com!

2. Give people a free subscription to your e-zine. Almost everyone is publishing a e-zine nowadays so it's important to give something extra with the free subscription. You could offer a free gift or advertising when people subscribe. If you do not have an ezine, there is a free program on one of my blogs (see Author Box).

3. Offer a free online directory or page of links to helpful resources like I do with my Newsman's Favorite Links Blog. The directory should be full of interesting ebooks, e-zines, web sites, etc. If people find your directory to be a valuable resource they will visit it over and over (see my Author Box).

4. Give your visitors a free ebook. I give links to these throughout my 15 blogs. I love Free! Some ebook writers even allow you to include your own ad or website URL in the ebook and allow other people to give it away when they get it from you. This is called Viral Marketing. Another way to spread the word about you! Hey, you could even write your own ebook and give it away! There are programs for this as well at My Links Blog.

5. Hold free online classes or seminars. They could be held in your web site's chat room. The idea of "live" information will definitely entice people to visit your web site. You will become known as an expert on the topic. You can even offer courses or classes via email to people who sign up.

6. Give visitors a free entry into your contest or sweepstakes. The prizes should be something of interest or value to your visitors. Most people who enter will continually revisit your web site to get the results. This does not have to be cash. It can be a valuable ebook that you got free from a Viral Marketer.

7. Let visitors download free software. It could be freeware, shareware, demos etc. You could even turn part of your site into a free software directory. If you created the software, include your ad inside and let other people give it away.

8. Offer free online services or utilities from your web site. They could be on search engine submitting, copy writing, article proofreading, etc. The service or utility should be helpful to your target audience.

9. Give free consulting to people who visit your web site. You could offer your knowledge via e-mail or by telephone. People will consider this a huge value because consulting fees can be very expensive. In fact, you can give them links or ebooks covering their area of interest but sign them up for email to get access to the information.

10. If you have an online Club, give your visitors a free membership for one year. People want to belong to something that benefits them, why not your online club. It could be a game club, video club, music club, writing club, etc. You could also give away a free e-zine for club members only. If your content is really unique, think about charging a monthly membership fee.

These are just 10 great ways to persuade visitors to keep in touch with you and that means a better page rank in the Search Engines!

Yours for success!

Diversity in Your Affiliate Portfolio

As you already know, affiliate marketing is literally one of the greatest businesses in the world once you get it up and going. It has been made popular on the internet by companies such as Clickbank, Commission Junction, and Amazon.

One thing that all of the super affiliates I have spoken to have in common is that they all have a collection of products that they are thinking of promoting/ are promoting. They know which products are launching. Products that have launched, products that have been successful for others… these guys are very critical about product selection.

What it means to have a diverse portfolio is that you need to have a variety of different affiliate programs that you promote.

As an understanding, the vast majority of affiliate programs fit into 3 basic payment structures:

Single Commission- One Level: Here you’re paid just once from the purchase of the customer. If that customer joins the said program you don’t earn any more commissions on sales made by the clients.

Cost Per Acquisition (CPA) Commission: Here you’re just one flat fee for the customer, not for his purchases.

Residual Commission- 2 Tiered and Above: You’re paid every time the referred customer makes a purchase and also a percentage of the commissions earned by referrals of that customer. You can therefore earn from your second, third, or fourth, etc. generation recruits even though it’s at a lower percentage normally.

Create an affiliate portfolio of different programs to sustain long term affiliate income. Smart affiliates know about selecting the right programs to promote, they’ve also focused on promoting just these few programs.

The key here is, you may want to balance your portfolio. This is so you can be generating income even if for some reason you’re not able to work.

This is exactly why residual and multi-tiered programs are absolutely necessary elements for a well balanced portfolio.

Therefore, plan and churn out your own in-house portfolio based on the product quality, sales conversions, commission percentage and availability of promotional tools.

Promoting your affiliate portfolio on a planned schedule will get you the best results. Build up this foundation and you will be on your way to affiliate success.

Amazing Benefits of Using Audio and Video in Website Promotion

Television and radio have been effective advertising mediums for the past several decades. These television commercials and radio spots successfully lead users to recognize and buy products or services. Many people can sing the jingles for various products and quickly identify the product advertised in a television commercial. The most notable advertising happens during the Super Bowl where many people watch the football game just for the commercials!

Don't get Banned from Google Adsense

Adding Google Adsense to your website is the easiest way to begin making money online. However a lot of newcomers in their race towards earning income fail to read through the Google policies and Terms of Service. Failure to keep your website inline with Google policies could result in permanent termination of your Adsense account. With a lot of websites out there suggesting ways to increase your Adsense income by going outside the Google TOS it's important for you as a publisher to understand these guidelines.

#1 - Code Modification

If you are as yet unfamiliar with Google Adsense, it consists of copying and pasting code generated for you onto your website. You choose the colors and layout and Google makes the code. Why bother fooling around with the code when you can generate a new design from their site and eliminate the possibility of getting banned.

#2 - Click These Ads!

Never give incentives to your site visitors to click on the ads. The Adsense ads will be relevant to the content on your page and alone should peak the interest of any visitors. To suggest clicking on them is a violation of Googles Terms of Service. Think about it, if you were the advertiser paying for every click would you want uninterested people clicking away, wasting your ad revenue with no intention of purchasing anything from your site?

#3 - Content

Interesting and original content is what keeps your visitors coming back to your website. But things like gambling, pornography, offensive language or even sites with no content are against the Terms of Service. This includes pages "Under Construction" or for registration. Adsense ads are not meant to be sent via email either.

#4 - Clicking Your Own Ads

Never, I repeat, never click on any of the ads displayed on any of your web pages. This is the worst violation and it will get you banned for life. This includes the use of any programs or robots to do it for you.

Those are the big no no's. There are also others such as no multiple accounts for one person, not having anything on your pages that looks like or competes with the Adsense ads, and never revealing your clickthrough rates or other specific information about your sites performance.

If for some reason you do get banned there is almost nothing you can do. Termination is completely at Google's discretion. At the minimum though I would suggest emailing them to understand why your account was terminated and try to work it out. After all Google's Adsense program is one of the best ways to generate income from your website, so why destroy your chance for a lifetime of income for a few clicks in short term?

Do You Make These Mistakes With Adsense?

by: Karl Stadler

Don't you think it is fascinating that with so many Adsense publishers, all setting up hundreds of sites, they have absolutely no idea who their clients are? The first rule of setting up and maintaining a successful business is thorough knowledge of your client.

Let's flip the coin and look at it from another angle. Google does not pay you for clicks on your site; the Adwords advertiser is forking out the money for your checks. The reason why he advertises is to sell a product or service or to drive people to his site for a subscription or whatever reason. He is doing it to gain a business advantage.

The question here is: Are you giving him an advantage or are you just costing him money?

You have heard "˜Adsense is dead' or "˜there is not so much money to be made from Adsense as in the past'. Most Adsense publishers think they have to set up a few more sites which will make up for the lost income. Dead wrong.

The reason for the downward spiral in Adsense income originates from untargeted ads on web pages. Most people would love to place the blame at the doorstep of Google, but this is not the case. The problem lies with the publishing of thousands of websites solely intended to get clicks, thus optimized for the search engine and not giving a second thought to the advertiser from Adwords.

The result from the misuse of Adsense is obvious. In most of the current Adwords information products one of the first warnings you are given when placing adwords ads is to remove the link to advertise on the content network. The reason is simple; the ads appear on untargeted pages leading to untargeted customers. This is a waste of the advertiser's money and a direct loss of income for the Adsense publisher. All the serious Adwords advertisers are not advertising on the content network, which in turn leads to less competition. The cost per click on a content page is far less that the cost on a generic page search.

Adwords and Adsense will never die and is and will remain one of the top income earners for many internet marketers.

So what now? The answer lies in improved sites with quality content. Play with the search engine not against it. If you want to compete with a search engine start your own. Not impossible, Google did it and succeeded.

So what exactly is improved content?

The keywords you are optimizing for should relate to your web content and add value for the visitor. This does not mean you have to write one thousand word pages all on your own. One to two hundred words per page will be fine as long as it answers the question or part of the question that the visitor was searching for with the search term. From there on the page can lead to Adsense ads and a click on the link will be a targeted visitor for the advertiser.

You also do not need to write each page yourself, you can still use PLR content and articles for your sites just make sure that the main question that the visitor would have when searching for that term is answered and lead them further to more specific information through Adsense ads.

Can you imagine the joy on your face when receiving a five figure check from Adsense, and think of the joy you would place on the face of the Adwords advertiser also receiving a five figure payday?

Once you have your site set up correctly there are a few elements that you need to give attention to. The truth about Adsense placement is that there is a trick to it. For high CTR your ad placement must be highly optimized.

I have seen this myself in testing different Adsense placement methods. One placement for all does not work. On certain pages it would be higher up and on others it would be lower down.

It is all dependent on the content of the page and the question you should ask yourself is at which point in the content is the visitor the most likely to want more specific information. If you write your content yourself you should write it in such a way that you give information and then raise curiosity, and it is at that point where your ad should appear for the first time. By utilizing this method and keeping your content targeted you will receive many clicks and your Adwords advertiser will receive the targeted visitors he wants.

Are you beginning to see how important it is to get the content and your ads right Now, let me ask you this: Are you one of the Adsense publishers who are costing advertiser's money or are you one that actually help make advertisers money?

Broad, Phrase, Exact, Negative - Four Google AdWords terms you must know for advertising success

A few days ago, I was setting up my latest Google AdWords campaign. My brother was watching me work through the process, and he asked me:
“Why do you put quotation marks and square brackets around some keywords?”

I was a bit surprised to realise that I couldn’t actually answer him - not in any definite way, at least. So, I set to work finding out what the matching options mean, and how they affect results.

First up is the default, Broad Match. This is where a keyword phrase is written as is, for example: google adwords

This method means that your Ad will potentially be shown to anyone searching for ‘google’ and ‘adwords’, in any order and possibly with other terms. So, anyone searching for ‘adwords google help’ could see your Ad.

Next is Phrase Match. This is where a keyword phrase is enclosed by quotation marks, for example: “google adwords”

This is essentially the next step up from Broad Match - your Ad could be shown to anyone searching for ‘google’ and ‘adwords’, but only in that order, and possibly with other terms included in the search. So, ‘how to start a google adwords campaign’ could trigger your Ad to be shown.

The last in the ‘positive’ matching options is Exact Match. This is where your keyword phrase is enclosed by square brackets, for example: [google adwords]

This is the most specific of the three types. In this case, your advert will only be shown if somebody searches for ‘google adwords’ in that order and with no other terms.

These options each have their own merits, but generally, the more specific the search term, the higher your CTR (Click Through Rate).

If you have a small niche to start with, then Broad Match will give you the most exposure. The downside is that the large number of triggering phrases could push your CPC (cost per click) up, as a result of competition.

Larger markets require highly-targeted Ads, and this is where Exact Match (and Phrase Match, to an extent) comes into play. Imagine trying to get clicks from keywords such as ‘car parts’ compared to ‘ford fiesta rear wheel bearing’. Obviously, the more specific your keyword terms, the more likely you are to get an interested visitor to your site.

The last of the keyword matching options is Negative Keyword. This is where a keyword is precluded by a minus sign, for example: -tricks

This stops your Ad from being shown if somebody searches using that term. For example, ‘google adwords tricks’ would stop your Ad from being shown.

This is useful for prequalifying prospect clients - if you are trying to sell something, then ‘-free’ would be a good term to include in your Keyword list.

Of course, as with any marketing campaign, which of these methods will work best for you is unpredictable, so always remember to test, test test!
